With the acquisition of VMware by Broadcom, drastic changes towards roadmap, licensing, partner eco-system the Customers are both worried and cautious on how to move forward.
Key Challenges seen by them:
Vendor Lock In - Current License and Support Contracts (Perpetual or Credits based) are due to expire in 1-3 years. Post this period, there is no clarity on how the renewals will work in their favour. The push from Broadcom to adopt VCF (VMWare Cloud Foundation) - a great bundled product, but is not the cup of Tea of every organisation (Mid-Enterprise), especially when they are not using the whole suite of products that come out of the box.
Resources - Although there is a vast pool of VMware skilled resources, however there is scarcity of experienced VCF resources. That would mean organisations have to undertake multiple upskilling trainings for their support teams, that is both cost and time intensive.
Inter-Operability - In modern datacenters all infrastructure components from different vendors are tightly coupled with VMWare with years of co-operation. With new direction towards VCF, some of this work has to be re-defined with vendors and Broadcom, that might cause challenges in a customer landscape.
With these challenges in mind, what could a Small to Enterprise customer do to offset these challenges and uncertainty.
Recommendations:
Explore Other Vendors - With current contracts still in place, it would be good for Customers to venture out and look for new Vendors. A natural choice would be move to Nutanix, with its maturity, ability to run on any platform, any hypervisor. They offer multiple offers towards license portability (free use) for 1 year helps to save on dual run costs. This will help organisations to ready themselves before the existing Contracts expire.
Resources - With base VMware Skills, current resources could be trained to understand Nutanix Cloud Platform and then mature their learning to help them manage the new platform with each. A mature training and Certification track for all Nutanix services catering to different roles will help gradual increase of skills.
Vast ecosystem - With a growing ecosystem of partners Nutanix is well suited to handle all integrations and solutions in place and also suggest new ways to solve challenges seen before with VMware. Lot of native tools and services that will help organisations to move from VMware to Nutanix in a seamless manner.
It would be really interesting to see how the next 6 months to 1 year pan out for both Broadcom, Nutanix and customers. For more details around assessment, planning, scoping and executing this move feel free to approach Hybrus AB
